Is GNSS the new standard in Ham Radio?

GPS (Global Positioning System) is the U.S.-owned satellite navigation system, while GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the overarching term for all global systems, including GPS, Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou. The key difference is that a GNSS receiver uses multiple satellite constellations for greater accuracy, coverage, and reliability, whereas a GPS-only device relies solely on U.S. satellites, making GNSS the more robust, modern standard, essentially treating GPS as just one component of a larger satellite toolbox. This system is currently found in models from brands like Retevis (HA2), Baofeng (UV-5RM Plus GPS), and Tidradio (TD-H9), enhancing outdoor safety and tracking for operators.
